Q. For reasons irrelevant, I haven't visited a single college yet, and I'm a senior who is seriously behind in applying - I haven't applied to a single school yet. I'm getting there. What do you think is the percentage of college undergrads who visit the college they end up in? If you actually find a statistic please please post the link here.

A. I do not know any statistics but I can tell you that visiting colleges, if possible, is realllyyy recommended!!! I would say that people who do not visit their intended colleges beforehand are the ones that end up transferring. It is important to visit to make sure that college is a good fit for you, has the resources you need to be successful and have the program that you want. You REALLY need to research your intended program area for that college to make sure it is what you want. I did not do that and I regret it. I chose my school because of nostalgia. My school is a big, well known, Big 10 school so I assumed that automatically meant that all their programs were amazing. I was wrong. Though my schools is very good school, the… [cont.]

A. You'll have to pay the tuition each year, so probably that means at least 4 times. Don't forget that you will have to pay for room and board too if you live on campus, and that will likely be a few thousand dollars more each semester. You will want to fill out the FAFSA. You may get some grants from the government (money you don't have to pay back) or loans (which you'll pay back later). I think in most cases they will give you enough financial aid that you'll be ok while you are going to school. However, once you graduate, it can be very difficult to have a lot of loans that you need to pay back. Therefore, you want to have as few as possible. Here are two tips: first, you need to look into less expensive colleges. You are either looking… [cont.]

But you have to pass the UPCAT (UP College Admissions Test) and your SAT is a good preparation for this. And YES, we do speak good English in the Philippines. It is our medium of instruction. Is a college diploma in Computer Programming sufficient to get me a good paying job?
Q. Only Canadians, please, because in other countries 'college' means a different thing. I will be graduating with a Geography degree from Wilfrid Laurier next year and I wanted to do GIS. I'm thinking that getting a diploma in college in computer programming will increase my chances for succesfull employment because I looked around at GIS jobs, and most of them require high computer proficiency. Also, are Canadian colleges as recognized world wide as universities? Thanks.
Asked by kat5998 - Fri Oct 19 10:42:26 2007 - Technology - 2 Answers - Comments

A. It doesn't matter what diploma. A diploma alone is not sufficient for anyone to be certain of getting a good paying job. As the previous person said, you have to have experience. You also have to prove your diploma is more than a piece of paper. You have to show you actually learned something and didn't only do just enough on tests to pass. You have to interview well. People who interview poorly rarely get hired. When they do get hired, they often get hired into poor jobs. You have to have some idea of what you want to do and why. The answer cannot be money. Technology employers don't want people who just want to make money. It sound like you have a plan that makes sense, though. Good luck.

A. No one cares about any diploma but your highest one. My high school one must be around somewhere because I never threw it out but I have not seen it for like 25 years. Just like you should not buy a high school class ring unless that is going to be your highest level of education. Also, it is considered really lame to wear any high school jackets, sweaters, hoodies, etc. when you get to college. Those things you put away to never wear again.

Q. Next year I am transferring from my community college to a four year university. I however do not know which one. What are the best colleges to transfer to right now. I am looking in California, Oregon, Washington, Arizona and Colorado.

A. Like others have said, the UC system (UC Berkeley, UCLA, UCSD are way up there in rankings, as well as SB, I, R, etc.). However, it is easier to get into those schools if you are a CA resident/going to a CC in California. If you're not in CA, you can also try U of Arizona or U of Washington, both are pretty good schools. Also keep in mind that CA is going through a massive budget crisis, so prices may go up and benefits may go down for a UC education.

Q. I mean my college follows a quarter system, so if I want to transfer to a college with a semester system do I have to send transcripts of all my quarters i.e. semesters and just one last thing. How hard it is to transfer to a state university like suny BU or rutgers?
Asked by Me! - Wed Dec 16 14:00:47 2009 - Higher Education (University +) - 3 Answers - Comments

A. If you have less than 30 credits at your first college, they may request a high school transcript as well as your college transcripts. You just contact your college (and high school, if applicable) and ask them to send transcripts to your new school. If you are enrolled in the new college, you need to go on Fafsa, no matter what, and put in a new school code to let them know you want money for a different school. Sometimes colleges ask you to submit your tax returns or your parents tax returns, too, before you can start your first term. Seems to be a random thing.

A. A community college is affordable and only issues AA degrees. You pay by units for classes and not a set semester fee. That's why it's more affordable. As for a university, this is a four year establishment where one can obtain a bachelor's degree in any subject they carry. If you want to just get your general education, then you go to a community college and transfer over to a university to obtain a bachelor's degree. Many people opt for community college because they are working and can't go to school full time. A university charges you a set fee for semester, it's very expensive and you have to pretty much go full time to get your money's worth. My husband is in law enforcement and you don't need a degree. But if you desire a degree,… [cont.]

What Christian college should I go to if I want to get into the music industry?
Q. Hey everybody. Right now I'm a (female) sophomore in high school in Omaha, NE. I'm trying to figure out where I want to go to college. I'm planning on working in the music industry when I graduate. I know of a Christian college called Evangel in Springfield, MO that offers a "Bachelor of Science in Music Industry". I want a program like that, but I also think it would be good if there was a record label near my college so I could possibly work as a college representative. Do any of you know where there are any Christian colleges with a good music industry program, AND a record label nearby so I could possibly work there while I'm in college?

A. Belmont University in Nashville, TN would be perfect. They offer a Bachelor of Music Business. Most Christian music record labels are situated in the heart of Nashville. Some that I know of include: Word Music (featuring artists like Amy Grant, Randy Travis, David Phelps, Point of Grace, Jaci Velasquez among many others), Sparrow records, Forefront Records, the list goes on and on. I had a friend who went to Belmont and received a music business degree and interned at a local Christian music label while she was in school and is not only working for them but also recording/releasing cd's/and opening for bands.

What college is the best for studying the accounting profession in the state of Michigan?
Q. I am considering a college change. I have just earned my Associates at Baker College of Flint. I was wondering if there is a more credible college here in Michigan that may be recognized if I search for a job outside of the state or if I were to move further up north. I realized that most of my professors with degrees and CPA certifications have gone to the University of Michigan. Would I be seen as a more credible candidate if I went to U of M instead of Baker? Would it look bad to get my degrees (Associate and Bachelor) from two different colleges? I would appreciate professional answers.

A. You want to get yoru Bachelor's degree from the best institution possible and with the best grades you can achieve. You will have access to more corporate recruiters and a better alumni network if you attend the University of Michigan, so I would advise you to go there.

A. Most colleges in the US will have an International Office - you could visit the website of US colleges you would be interested in, find their international office, and see if exchanges to Japan are possible! Most exchanges are by semester/term, but maybe you could negotiate to 2 years (though that would probably extend the length of time you would need to do your Bachelor's!). Sorry this isn't listing specific schools, but I'm Canadian and I went to school here - but I hope it helps!

How many recommendations for college should one high school teacher write?
Q. I don't know how clear I am going to make this, but I'm just wondering how many recommendations a teacher should write. I'm planning on applying to quite a few colleges, so should I ask one teacher to write the same recommendation for each college? Or should I ask a different teacher for each college I apply to? I can't exactly ask a teacher to write one and make copies of it, since most colleges give you a recommendation form with the application that the teacher should fill out. Thanks for your answers!

A. I am a high school teacher. I get lots of requests for recommendations for colleges from my students. Here are suggestions. 1) Put the request in writing. It does not have to be a formal letter to the teacher, but in our busy days, a casual "Hey Mr. G, can you write a recommendation for me?" is easily forgotten. 2) With the request, include the form if there is one. I usually only write "see attached" on such forms anyway. I will write my recommendations on my high school's letterhead. 3) I will ask the student if they want it to a specific institution or just a general one. If they need a specific institution or two, I do not mind as it is a simple thing to change as I type my letters on a computer. 4) Is students want… [cont.]
